February Spotlight: Sonny’s Black People of Interest – Desiree Okafor & FreightBridge
As we celebrate Black History Month this February, we aren’t just looking back at the titans of the past, we’re shining a massive spotlight on the visionaries building the future right now. At The Black Wall Streets, our mission is to rebuild the spirit of the original Black Wall Street by creating economic opportunities and highlighting the excellence within our community.
This month, our "Sonny's Black People of Interest" series is honored to feature Desiree Okafor, the powerhouse founder and CEO of FreightBridge. Her story is a masterclass in grit, technical brilliance, and the kind of "for us, by us" mentality that defines the #buyblack movement. From a $12,000 personal loan to a $1.4 billion unicorn, Desiree is proving that when we invest in our own brilliance, the sky isn't even the limit.
The Roots: From the Driver’s Seat to the C-Suite
Desiree Okafor didn’t just stumble into the logistics industry; she was born into it. As the daughter of Nigerian immigrants who settled in the Midwest, she grew up watching her parents run a small, independent trucking company. She saw firsthand the late nights, the complicated paperwork, and the thin margins that define the American supply chain.
"I saw my father at the kitchen table every night, manually calculating routes and fuel costs," Desiree recently shared. "The technology existed for the giants, but the small players, the ones who actually move this country, were being left behind."
That realization stayed with her. After a brief stint in traditional corporate finance, the pull of her roots became too strong to ignore. She didn't want to just participate in the industry; she wanted to revolutionize it.

The $12,000 Gamble: Bootstrapping a Revolution
In early 2020, while the rest of the world was slowing down, Desiree was revving up. She took a $12,000 personal loan from her own hard-earned savings and officially launched FreightBridge. There were no fancy offices or massive seed rounds. Instead, Desiree operated out of a WeWork hot desk, fueled by coffee and a conviction that data could save the trucking industry.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the FreightBridge origin story is the "how." Desiree wasn't a software engineer by trade. However, she knew that to build a supply chain intelligence platform, she needed an algorithm that didn't exist yet. So, she did what any modern visionary does: she went to YouTube.
She spent months teaching herself Python, working late into the night to write the first lines of code for the FreightBridge algorithm herself. This wasn't just a business; it was a labor of love and a testament to the resourcefulness that defines Black entrepreneurship.
The Ascent: Zero to $1.4 Billion
By 2022, the results of her hard work were undeniable. Without a single outside investor, Desiree had grown FreightBridge to 180 paying customers and a staggering $4.2 million in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR). She had built a profitable, scalable tech company on her own terms.
The industry finally caught on to what the community already knew: Desiree Okafor was a force of nature.
Fast forward to 2026, and FreightBridge has officially achieved "Unicorn" status. The company recently closed a $220 million Series C funding round led by the legendary Andreessen Horowitz, bringing the company’s valuation to a cool $1.4 billion. With a revenue run rate of $190 million and serving over 4,200 customers, FreightBridge is no longer the underdog, it’s the standard.

Impact Over Everything
What makes Desiree a true "Person of Interest" for The Black Wall Streets isn't just her net worth; it’s her commitment to communal growth. Despite her global success, she has kept her feet firmly planted in the Midwest, where her journey began.
Today, FreightBridge employs 1,140 people, with a remarkable 67% of that workforce based in the Midwest. She isn't just building software; she’s building livelihoods in communities that are often overlooked by the Silicon Valley bubble.
Furthermore, she is putting her own capital where her heart is. Desiree recently launched the FreightBridge Founders Fund, a $15 million pool of her personal capital dedicated entirely to minority-owned B2B startups located outside of the top metro markets. This is the essence of why we encourage everyone to #buyblack: because when our leaders win, they reach back and pull the rest of the community up with them.
Modern Money Move: The Power of the "Self-Funded Start"
In our "Modern Money Move" segment, we look at the strategic decisions that set titans apart. Desiree Okafor’s biggest move wasn't raising $220 million: it was waiting to raise it.
By bootstrapping FreightBridge for the first two years, Desiree maintained total control over her vision and her equity. Many founders rush to give away 20-30% of their company for a small check early on. Desiree bet on herself instead.
The Lesson: You don't always need a venture capitalist to start; you just need a problem to solve and the grit to learn the skills (like Python on YouTube!) to solve it. When you build something of value on your own, you're the one who gets to set the terms when the big players finally come knocking.

Desiree Okafor’s success is a reminder of the incredible talent waiting to be discovered and supported within our community. When you choose to #buyblack, you aren't just making a purchase; you are participating in a cycle of economic empowerment that leads to more stories like FreightBridge.
